Martin Phipps
Coming from a musical background (he is Benjamin Britten’s godson), Martin read drama at Manchester University – fortunately for the acting world he concentrated on writing music. Following the early critical success of Eureka Street and now of the BBC period dramas North and South and Elizabeth - The Virgin Queen, Martin's music is consistently innovative and strikes at the emotional heart of the drama.
In the
summer of 2005 Martin wrote a haunting score to the film
Pierrepoint, directed by Adrian
Shergold. Other recent credits include the The
Wife of Bath from the BBC’s contemporary adaptation
of the Canterbury Tales, the acclaimed contemporary drama Dirty
Filthy Love and the thriller She’s
Gone starring Ray Winstone. Martin’s enchanting score
for the 4 part BBC period drama, Elizabeth
- The Virgin Queen, in which he incorporated the
wonderful voices of the Medieval Babes to excellent effect, was
recognised with the Ivor Novello Award
2007 and an
RTS Award for Best Original Score. He also scored the
British feature film, The Flying Scotsman, which tells
the true story of celebrated Scottish cyclist Graeme Obree, as well
as the BBC adaptation of the 2004 Man Booker prize winning The
Line Of Beauty by Alan Hollinghurst.
Martin scored the gripping drama Low Winter Sun for
Channel 4, starring Mark Strong and Brian McCardie and Ruby
In The Smoke, the first of the Sally Lockhart Mysteries
adapted and written by Phillip Pullman for the BBC and aired Christmas
2006. He scored Persuasion, the latest ITV adaptation
of Jane Austen’s novel, and Grow Your Own, a feature
for Warp Films starring Omid Djalili as the head of a refugee family
granted an allotment in an English village. He recently scored the
BBC's adaptation of Jane Austen's Sense and Sensibility,
adapted by Andrew Davies. He also recently scored the BBC's Oliver
Twist adaptation, which was recognised with the Ivor
Novello Award 2008 for Best Television Soundtrack.
Martin's most recently finished scoring the Rowan Joffe helmed drama
The Shooting of Thomas Hurndall for Talkback
Thames, about the peace activist, Tom Hurndall, who was tragically
shot by an Israeli sniper whilst attempting to protect three Palestinian
children who were being used as human sheilds. He is currently working
on Whitechapel with Ruth Barrett for Carnival
Films, and Wallander for Yellow Bird/Left
Bank Pictures and starring Kenneth Branagh.
