Sheridan Tongue
A
BAFTA
nominated composer for his contemporary score to
Spooks Series III, Sheridan Tongue recently
completed the children's drama Summerhill for
Tiger Aspect. It is a score that moves from worry and pathos to
adventure and fantasy and is based on the true story of the school,
Summerhill, and the Government's attempt to close it down in 2000.
For the modern version of Cinderalla for
Hattrick Productions (starring James Nesbit), Sheridan composed
a quirky and slick score for his first comedy. Dipping into period
drama, the score for the latest Sea of Souls (Carnival
Films for ITV) gave the Victorian flashbacks a real reasonance,
adding a lush modern backdrop to the story. For the black comedy
Dead Clever for Granada TV (starring
Helen Baxendale and Surranne Jones), Sheridan created a score that
went from the excitement of young friendships to the dark recesses
of the twisted mind of the best selling author, as the plot got
thicker and thicker.
Sheridan
created a richly haunting score for series IX, X and XI of Silent
Witness and is close to completing Silent Witness
series XII (starring Emilia Fox and Tom Ward). He has been working
with directors Michael Offer, Alrick Riley, Martyn Friend, Philippa
Langdale, Maurice Phillips and Nick Renton on this very ‘filmic’
and atmospheric series. His love of combining real instruments with
a textural/sample based score has created a rich soundtrack for
the stories and characters. He also scored the music to the award
winning Helena Bonham Carter film: Magnificent 7 (Monte
Carlo TV Festival 2006 winner). Based on the true story of mother
Jacqui Jackson and her seven children, it is an ‘urban fairytale’
and follows the family through the seasons of the year. The music
was composed for string orchestra, harp, marimba, guitar, drums
and piano.
Sheridan’s
classical training together with his adeptness and experience of
working with cutting edge technology enables him to create highly
individual scores. He has the ability to compose in many musical
styles, equally at home writing for orchestra or creating sample
based contemporary scores.
Sheridan
is highly committed, and this combined with his ability to communicate
with and adapt to the needs of the project keep him in demand. He
has in the past always inspired loyalty from producers and directors
who appreciate his flexibility and willingness to meet the needs
of the production.
For series
II of Redcap (directed by Justin Chadwick and starring
Tamzin Outhwait) Sheridan created a strong contemporary score featuring
female voice, Norwegian kemenche violin, sarangi and Indian wooden
flute. He also composed the score and title themes for the first
three series of Down to Earth (starring Warren Clarke
and Pauline Quirk) as well as acting as music consultant. This evocative
and imaginative score prompted a CD soundtrack which was released
on Decca Records.
Sheridan
worked with the Royal Philharmonic Orchestra on the award winning
BBC2 series Battlefield Britain (presented by Peter
Snow and Dan Snow), which utilized the latest computer graphic techniques
to recreate famous battles in history ranging from Boudicca through
to the Second World War. He was commissioned to do the 2nd series:
20th Century World Battles. He also created the richly
orchestral score for The Russian Revolution in Colour.
Sheridan
arranged 'Always on my mind' for the film, Purely Belter
written by Mark Herman and produced by Elizabeth Karlsen, and Starring
Kevin Whately. Other features include the score composition for
an Angela Carter film, The Kitchen Child for Channel
4 films, as well as A to Z, which was directed By
Michael Geoghegan for Channel 4 films.
He has
worked with Erykah Badu, Beverly Knight, Blur, Verve, and the James
Taylor Quartet . He co-produced three tracks featuring Jocelyn Brown
for Disney’s soundtrack album Hercules.
Sheridan
draws on a wide pool of world-class musicians to feature in his
work , incorporating them into his scores to produce a very individual
sound.
