Rob Lane - Composer Profile
One of the most versatile and in demand composers working today, Rob has won no less than six major awards for his work and received nominations for a further nine. Three Ivor Novellos, a BAFTA and three RTS Awards have fully confirmed his ability to write distinctive music for any genre, whether psychological thriller or quirky comedy, action-adventure or political docu-drama. Equally at home writing for orchestra or working with samples, his aim is always to create boldly cinematic music that intimately supports and enhances the drama on-screen.
Rob recently completed scoring West Is West, the sequel to the much-loved East Is East for director Andy DeEmmoney and producer Leslee Udwin. Work on the score included a trip to Mumbai to collaborate with Bollywood music stars, Shankar Eshaan Loy, and other world class players. In 2009 he provided music for The Damned Utd, the Peter Morgan adaptation of the David Peace novel for Left Bank Pictures / BBC Films and starring Michael Sheen and Timothy Spall. Earlier film credits include the South African political thriller Red Dust, starring Hilary Swank, the Warner Bros comedy, Mrs Ratcliffe's Revolution, directed by Bille Eltringham; The Lives of the Saints, directed by Rankin and Chris Cottam, and two documentary features: Nick Broomfield's Aileen: The Life & Death of a Serial Killer and Game Over: Kasparov & The Machine directed by Vikram Jayanti. He also scored Deathwatch, the horror film starring Jamie Bell, The Escapist for Sky Pictures, directed by Gillies MacKinnon, and The Young Poisoner's Handbook for British Screen.
In TV, Rob recently finished Hidden for BBC1 starring Philip Glenister. He also just received an RTS nomination for his work on The Suspicions of Mr Whicher, directed by James Hawes for Hat Trick Productions and starring Paddy Considine. In 2010 he provided a large orchestral score for a new US Network mini-series version of Ben Hur starring Ray Winstone and Joseph Morgan and directed by Steve Shill. In September 2008 Rob received his fourth Emmy nomination for his work on the hugely acclaimed HBO mini-series John Adams, chronicling the life of the second President of the United States of America from the beginnings of the American War of Independence, through to his death. With Paul Giamatti in the title role, the project was co-produced by Tom Hanks and Playtone Pictures. The relationship with HBO had begun with Elizabeth I, starring Helen Mirren and Jeremy Irons, (for which Rob’s score received a BAFTA, RTS Award and Ivor Novello Award), and been cemented with an Emmy nominated score for Longford, written by Peter Morgan and starring Jim Broadbent and Samantha Morton.
In 2007 Rob received both BAFTA and RTS nominations for his work on the BBC's much praised Jane Eyre, directed by Susanna White and starring Ruth Wilson and Toby Stephens. Other TV credits include, Tess Of The D'Urbervilles for the BBC, the fantasy series Merlin for Shine Ltd/BBC Wales (Series 1 to 3), and The 39 Steps for the BBC, a one-off adaptation of John Buchan's classic novel. He also scored the first series of Jimmy McGovern's The Street for BBC1, Stuart, A Life Backwards, a joint BBC and HBO one-off drama by Sam Mendes' Neal Street Productions, Marie Lloyd, the BBC biopic of the legendary British music hall entertainer, the political thriller series Whistleblowers for Carnival Films, and the Mark Haddon scripted Coming Down The Mountain for Tiger Aspect.
Earlier major credits include the BBC's Blackpool for which Rob won the 2005 Ivor Novello Award; the BBC2 series The Long Firm and To The Ends Of The Earth, as well as Charles II and The Lost World for BBC1, both of which received Emmy nominations for the music.
